Unfortunately, there have been a lot of deaths involving accidental shootings lately. This really makes me feel like I need to put just a few common sense tips on here that could help to preven any more shooting accidents.
First of all, always treat a gun like it is loaded. I have been told this ever since I held my first gun when I was a little kid. Even if you are pretty sure that your gun is empty, you should always assume that it is loaded. There is always that possiblity that there is still a bullet in the chamber.
Second, never check to see if a gun is loaded or clean by looking down the barrel. There are MANY other ways to check to see if a gun is clean or to check and see if it is loaded.
Third, never point a gun at someone else. Unless you are defending yourself, you should never jokingly point your gun at someone. This is when accidents happen and you wind up shooting someone. If you are carrying a loaded gun while you are walking near someone else, always keep the gun pointed down at the ground, but make sure that you don't let your barrel drag on the ground.
One of the most important tips that I can share with you is to lock your guns up when you are not using them and to keep your guns and your ammo in two seperate places!!! There are way too many incidents where there are little kids killing each other by accident because they get their hands on their parents guns. If you can't afford a big expensive gun safe to store your guns in, go buy a chamber lock for your gun and lock it in a closet where a child cannot get to it. You can get a good chamber lock for any kind of gun, from a handgun to a shotgun, at a fairly decent price. Paying for any type of storage unit or safety mechanism for a gun is never a bad idea. You can't put a price on safety.
